Big Idea
Some teachers are reluctant to switch to Standards Based Grading because they feel that SBG is less rigorous even though over two-thirds of my students actually found SBG to be equal if not more rigorous than traditional grading. Today, I’m sharing 3 things I do to make SBG more rigorous.
Episode Notes
Briefly, here are 3 things I do to make Standards Based Grading more rigorous:
- Get students to go deeper. For exam questions, instead of just marking for correctness in a student’s response, I ask for a greater depth of explanation. This fits well with skills like communication or argumentation, which I can assess along a proficiency scale from emerging to extending.
- Be creative with your questions. If there’s something you want to assess students on – for example, their ability to analyze trends – then find a creative way to apply and assess that skill.
- Give projects where students are required to iterate and demonstrate improvement. This requires creative thinking from students and for them to produce something that works – both of which are difficult tasks.
