Ep109 – Is this CER statement Proficient or Developing?

Handouts are available at the bottom.

Big Idea

How can we use proficiency scales to mark skills while ensuring consistency? That is, how can we ensure that a student that scores a developing mark from one teacher and scores the same from another? One thing we can do to create this consistency is to mark assignments together. In this episode, we mark CER statements together to develop consistency.

Episode Notes

Here are some key points from the video:

  1. Proficient CER response should include 3 things:  the correct answer, an analysis of the graph or data, and a complete scientific explanation that support the analysis and answer

  2.  In our student samples, only Response 3 was considered Proficient. Many of the responses were developing because they did not have a strong enough analysis or scientific explanation.

  3. Marking together helps to define the elements of an assignment that needs to be included for the work to be considered Emerging, Developing or Proficient. This invariably helps students and parents understand what the standards are.
