Big Idea
When we’re using proficiency scales, does a “proficient” in one class mean the same thing as “proficient” in another. For example, does proficient in science class mean the same level of achievement as proficient in social studies or math class? Answer: it does!
Episode Notes
Here are some ideas from the video:
-
The skills we are teaching in each subject – whether it be science, math or social studies – are basically the same. In each subject, we teach 2 skills – literacy and numeracy.
-
In BC, the Ministry of Education has published a resource called Learning Pathways, which outlines the skills that make up a literate learner or a numerate learner.
- Basically, all subjects – science, socials, math teach literacy. The only thing that is different is the content and experiences we access to teach those skills.
- Thus, what “proficient” means with regards to being a literate learner means the same thing in science as it does in social studies and in math too
